래미안 commercials, part 2

This one features nature, nurturing (education, etc.), but also stresses the propinquity to a Samsung digital park and the way various smart systems in the apartment building will transform the lives of people.

This week's theme: songs.  And, yes, there have been a large number of them, from "럭키 서울" (1949)  to "광화문 연가" (1987),  "서울 서울 서울" (1988) and the decidedly mediocre "SEOUL" (2009)--sorry Super Junior.

Our lecturer for the evening emphasized the changing themes of Seoul songs that tracked the fortunes of the city, from the desire for success (욕망) to a longing for the suburbs.  But what (for me) seemed to tyoify all of the songs was the wild swings between desire and loss.

Lots of loss there, but also the inevitability of change?   But is this "New York, New York"?

Lots of interest from people, and some good historical notes.  There are 300 markets in Seoul--전통, 동네, 등. And, we learned that markets begin with the construction of the city walls (한양도성) in the early 15th century.

Fewer Cars, Better City

A design contest hosted by 아름지기 gallery in 서촌.  Lots of interesting ideas for walkable, liveable cities . . .And some well-earned critiques of the car and suburb complex which continues to weight heavily on the lives of health of Seoul residents.  http://www.arumjigicompetition.org

An installation at the Seoul Museum of History . . .Hong has been a chronicler of Seoul for decades, and this collection from the archives highlights his concerns for the disenfranchised, as well as an abiding interest in alley-way culture.  Particularly interesting--the curators interspersed some of his photos with life story narratives from "Memory in Seoul" (메모리인서울).  .

Once again, an interesting session, this time focusing on the role of plazas in Seoul.  First, a quick historic survey on Seoul plaza, one that (like the one at Seoul public library) elides entirely any role the plaza may have played in public dissent and activism.  Then, it was on to an interesting discussion of the role of public spaces--with lots of comparisons to Europe.  Finally, some discussion on where people meet, and their thoughts on Seoul's public spaces in general.

Two days later (on Sunday, March 15), I'm at a conference on urban planning--the last day, and the reports of numerous acrhitects, planners and public administration people to re-make 세운 상가 . . .a brutalist structure that dates from the Park Chung Hee days.   The area, though, has a much longer history than that . . .The point of the conference, though, was to gesture to alternatives to "big plans": to argue for small-scale development that takes into account mixed land-use, local history, collaborative planning.  Jane Jacobs stuff and, not incidentally, urban ethnography.

Week 2 of this "talk concert" series focused on important historic periods in Seoul's history.  Again, a bit of a disconnect--Dr. Choi discussed historic roots of Seoul during Koryo and Choson, while people who reflected on significant times chose (in 2 out of 3 instances) for recent history, including post-1960s industrialization and the 88 Olympics.
